Mattie Hobbs Honored for 100th Birthday
Not many people can say they have lived for an entire century, but Mattie Hobbs of Reserve, New Mexico, has. Mattie and her husband Roy were baptized into the Church of God in 1970. She has been a wonderful example of love and service to God’s people and to the community ever since. In honor of her 100th birthday, the Albuquerque congregation held a camp-out at the KOA in Silver City during the weekend of July 20.
Some members camped in RVs, some in tents, and some in small cabins, but meals were held together both Friday and Saturday night. Much fellowship was enjoyed around the campfire at night. On the Sabbath, church services were held at the rehabilitation facility in Silver City, where Mrs. Hobbs is currently living. For several years Mrs. Hobbs has been listening to services via phone hook-up—so this was a special treat for her.
After a sermon on “Caleb—The Wisdom of Senior Citizens” by pastor Randy Schreiber, Mrs. Hobbs was presented with several gifts, including a bouquet of roses and a card signed by the UCG home office; a picture-book with photographs, scriptures and special notes from each Albuquerque church member or family; and several hand-made flower pens from young Maria Ford. Hymns were accompanied on the guitar by Eva Velazquez and Al Watters, and on the autoharp by Karen Ford.
When church services were concluded, the Albuquerque choir, led by Karen Ford, performed a concert for the residents of the rehab facility. They sang many well loved selections such as “Days of Elijah,” “God of Love, God of Mercy” and “Streets of Gold.” The guest of honor had an opportunity to hear special music in person for a change. Mattie was thrilled with the fellowship, gifts and music. She graciously thanked us and asked us to come back and visit again soon. The Albuquerque congregation plans to hold another campout and spend time visiting her on her 101st birthday!
