Political Turmoil Portends Trouble for America

Widespread Concern that November Election Will Not End Well

On September 15, in West Palm Beach, Florida, another crazed American citizen attempted to shoot former President and current presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Americans wonder what the two attempts on Trump's life portend for the November election.

The world is watching and wondering also. The New York Times Paris Bureau chief, Roger Cohen, wrote on September 17: “There is now widespread concern across the globe that the November election will not end well and that American democracy, once a beacon to the world, has frayed to the breaking point.” That is a sad commentary on the state of American politics, and make no mistake, America’s enemies are taking note. They look for the signs of weakness they may exploit.

God has blessed America

By God's providence, America grew into the greatest nation the world has ever known. He has been true to His promise to faithful Abraham that “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 12:3). (See our Bible study aid The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy).

Indeed, the United States has become a blessing for humanity. It has shared its wealth and influence for the good of other nations. It has backed up its commitment to liberty for the oppressed, even to shedding its own blood in foreign wars. The world benefits from American ingenuity, which has led to many lifesaving and life-enhancing advances in science, medicine and agriculture. America's economy has fueled the economies of other nations, thereby advancing the standard of living of many people worldwide. Yet, American stability—which has benefitted the world—is now in question. If America cannot ensure peace within its borders, how can it ensure the peace of the world?

Trouble ahead for America

The nation has turned its back on the One who blessed it with unmatched wealth and influence in the world. It has become a “sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a brood of evildoers" (Isaiah 1:4). If America does not repent it puts itself in peril. Jesus prophesied of the coming “great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world” (Matthew 24:21). This will be the “time of Jacob's trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7) for America. The leading nation among the descendants of Jacob, will fall. Thankfully, because of God’s mercy, “he shall be saved out of it” (same verse).

The warning signs of the America’s coming trouble are evident, and Jesus warns His followers to “Watch" and "be ready, for the Son of Man is coming” (Matthew 24:42-44). Though America has lost its way, its citizens still benefit from God's blessings upon her. He still allows them relative peace, prosperity and the precious freedom to pursue their faith. Now is the time to seek a true understanding of His word, the Bible. Now is the time to find the true faith that Jesus preached to be ready for America's difficult days ahead.
