Little Rock, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, Congregations Celebrate 50th Anniversary

The Little Rock, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, United Church of God congregations celebrated their 50th anniversaries on July 9 and 10 in Arkansas.

There were 94 people in attendance for Sabbath services in Jacksonville, Arkansas, on July 9 to hear split-sermons by Fred Kellers and Melvin Rhodes. Mr. Kellers, pastor of the Little Rock church for nine years from 1977-1986, gave an updated version of a sermon he had given there 25 years ago and encouraged us to endure to the end. Mr. Rhodes, Chairman of the Council of Elders, spoke about where we are in prophecy. Both sermons were well-received, interesting and encouraging.

After services, we all enjoyed a beautifully presented and delicious buffet meal prepared by ladies of the Little Rock congregation. While we ate, we were treated to a memory-jogging video history with photos of many who have attended God’s Church during the past 50 years in Little Rock or Memphis. Among those attending our 50th anniversary service were four people who attended the first Little Rock Church of God service.

In the photo they are, from the left: Lyndal Hayden, Deanna O’Dell, Helen Baugh and Bill Farnsworth. They are pictured with Mr. Kellers and his wife Lucretia (far right).

The following day, July 10, an estimated 85 people braved the 100 plus degree weather to attend a church picnic in Maumelle Park. The delicious meal included barbecued chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, various side dishes, desserts and soft drinks. Later, ice-cold Arkansas watermelons and homemade ice cream were served. A few participated in leisurely sports briefly, but mainly people just enjoyed visiting with old friends, some of whom they had not seen in years.

The Sabbath service and picnic were both outstanding occasions we will remember for years to come.
