As we near Passover, we must fully appreciate what Christ went through to die for our sins. Delve into these four areas of His crucifixion 1.) Jesus endured great fear and emotional stress 2.) He was betrayed and accused 3.) He was mocked 4.) He was scourged.

Sermon Notes

I Cor. 11:27

We need to have the right focus as we head into the spring Holy Days.

None of attend the service in a worthy manner.  Whoever takes the Passover service lightly, is guilty of the body and blood of Christ.

When we gather to remember Jesus’ sacrifice, we do so in full appreciation of what He went through.

Four Separate Parts of Christ’s Sacrifice.

1.)  Jesus endured great fear and emotional stress.

We have had our own trials and tribulations and they often come as a surprise, Christ knew He would experience these ahead of time.  That is a whole different way of experiencing a trial.

Matt. 26:31 → Jesus knew He would be abandoned by His closest friends.  When we have trials, we have our friends and family to help us.  Jesus didn’t have everyone.

Matt. 26:36

Luke 22:44 → Christ prayed in agony and His sweat poured out like great droplets of blood.

John 12:27

Heb. 5:7 → Christ was overwhelmed in mental and emotional grief.

2.)  Jesus was betrayed and accused

Christ knew He would be betrayed by His own people.

Matt. 20:17-10

Christ knew in great detail what He would face.

Matt. 26:20-25

Matt. 26:45 → The event of being betrayed.

Christ was betrayed by a stranger, but by someone He loved.

Matt. 27:1 → They were motivated to have Jesus Christ put to death.  These chief preists sought to kill Jesus on a regular basis all thoughout Jesus’ life.

Jesus was accused of many things.  The Roman government needed a reason to put Jesus to death.

The Jewish leaders had to work to build a case against Jesus.

Mark 15:1

Luke 23:1 → They accused Jesus of perverting the law.  But, Pilate didn’t care that Jesus said He was the king of the Jews.

They were painting Jesus as a rabble-rouser.

3.)  Jesus was Mocked

It is significant because Jesus is the son of God.  His mocking took place at the Sanhedrin trial.

Mark. 14:55

These Jewish mocked Jesus and spat upon Him.

The mockery also took place when He was handed over to the Roman authorities.

Mark 15:6

Christ was doing things the Jewish leaders could not do -- He was inspiring people, He was healing people.

Mark 15:16

Matt. 27:27-31 → The third place He was mocked was on the cross.

Luke 23:34-41
Matt. 27:41-44

4.)  Jesus Christ was scourged

Mark 10:33 → Christ knew His scourging far ahead of when it took placed.

Jesus knew in great detail on what He would face.

Psalms 129:3

Isa 50:6 → I gave my back to those who struck me.  Jesus Christ took this abuse because He knew that we needed it.

John 19:1-16

Something that Pilate had Jesus scourged to gain pity from the Jewish leaders.  Christ was badly beaten, He was marred beyond recognition.

Isa. 52:15

Psalms 22:17

John 19:30

Isa. 53:

I Cor. 11:23
