Just some fun quotes but seriously

The world we live in has many issues clouding a real understanding of the institution of marriage that our God has given us.

All you have to do is Look at the how cheap and easy it is to have a surface relationships. Today people can divorce, can marry or just link-up for a time have a child and then leave with no strings attached. It serves peoples selfishness and lusts to have these relationships. The government provides enablers for this culture, it supplies abortions, money, food, housing, phones, and sometimes transportation to support those victimized by surface commitments. There are many negative societal problems created by this seen in the poorer parts of our cities not to mention the personal damage on the individuals and children across the spectrum, a lifetime of damages that may never heal!

On the flip side - what about the new trends like PolyAmore where 3 or more people decide to have a relationship with fidelity rules like a marriage but agreed to by more than just two people? They do say there is nothing wrong with a traditional marriage, they agree with its premise but need to include more. How can these really contribute positively to building a society’s future children that leads to strong God focused families?

The things I think we are all seeing is that there is experimentation and confusion as humanity tries to find its own way without absolutes, how can our society survive the long-term,

News flash, it won’t

2 Tim 3:2-5 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

What is it that everyone is missing from the institution of marriage that has survived for thousands of years?

What are the benefits of marriage that being ignored and aren’t being talked about on the news or in the chat rooms?

We will look at God’s institution of marriage and what He intended, and how it helps us to be part of His family.

Here are some key points

One – monogamous marriage has grown these civilizations for thousands of years – it’s the foundation of our societies and – obviously – it’s why we are here today!

A simple fact that is easily missed….

It all began in the Garden of Eden – God created Adam and Eve – here is the account

Gen 2:18-25 18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature that was its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23 And Adam said:

“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.”

24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

It was the first marriage that began everything

Mark 10:6-8  But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’[a]‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’; [b] so then they are no longer two, but one flesh.

The basic principle is marriage includes a physical sexual process and emotional and spiritual process as well

which “joins” them male and female as “one flesh”.

The point is that God set this up so that two can become one and share everything in this life and produce offspring that reflect their oneness. And should also reflect our relationship of oneness with God. Thereby passing love and life onto the next generation.

So let’s talk about Oneness

The Old Testament word for one used here is Strongs #259 EHAD which means one or unity in one

It stresses unity while recognizing diversity within that oneness.

It is most strongly used in

Deut 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!

Or in the New Testament

Mark 12:29  Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

1Cor 8:6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

The one includes God the Father, Jesus and us

John 10:30I and My Father are one.”

John 17:20-23 20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will[a] believe in Me through their word; 21 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.

Jesus is talking about the concept of two or many being one!

We can see the Bible refers to many ones!

ONE’S

One Flesh = Male and Female become one and, many can become one and speak with one voice even though we are many

One Mind = Truth Doctrine even though we are many

One Spirit = Baptism for all of us & the Holy Spirit

One Father = Adam, Abraham, God and Jesus

Through these concepts, we will see how even though we are many and separate and separate from God we can become one

One Flesh = We just read about that in Genesis = It can also be our Voice even though we are many we have one voice

Ex 24:3  So Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the judgments. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words which the Lord has said we will do.”

One Spirit = Baptism for all of us

1Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into[a] one Spirit.

Philip 1:27 27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel,

Rom 8:14  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

1cor 12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

One Father = We just read about God the Father and even Adam is the first man and Abraham the father of the faithful – We now have a new Adam

1Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive

Rom 5:12-15 + 17  Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)[1]

One Mind = Truth Doctrine even though we are many this is the way to become one through a common belief.

1Cor 1:1010 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment

1Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us[a] in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,

The concept of oneness – we will explore more but first an obvious issue

That requires a very firm commitment to make that happen between the man and women. Marriages should reflect a divine purpose

1 Peter 3:7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.

Eph 5:25 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

There are scriptures for the wife as well but my wife deleted them for you!

Prayers being hindered = Here God is highlighting 2 points with the nation of Israel and their Infidelity in their covenant relationships the first is with foreign Gods and the second. Here God has witnessed the innocent Israelite Wives as they being divorced by their husbands who chased after foreign wives or younger wives

Mal 2:13-15 And this is the second thing you do:
You cover the altar of the Lord with tears,
With weeping and crying;
So He does not regard the offering anymore,
Nor receive it with goodwill from your hands.
14 Yet you say, “For what reason?”
Because the Lord has been witness
Between you and the wife of your youth,
With whom you have dealt treacherously;
Yet she is your companion
And your wife by covenant.
15 But did He not make them one,
Having a remnant of the Spirit?
And why one?
He seeks godly offspring.
Therefore take heed to your spirit,
And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.

God intends that we seek a covenant relationship with Him and our spouse and that it will produce Godly offspring!

It is clear that the depth of the marriage relationship and their relationship with God is critical to God’s purpose and our happiness

I have been married for 33 years and every time we had issues it was solved by deepening our relationship especially for our children’s sakes.

More life problems have been averted in our lives and our children’s lives by the deepness and quality of our relationship.

It’s obvious what God intended and what we can do to firmly establish marriages

The Marriage Vows points to a covenant that embodies many things God intends for us to develop and to join in oneness with each other and God.

ONENESS or One-Mind

How can we experience this “ONE” or oneness or as the New Testament calls it “ONE Accord” Strong’s # 3661 Homothymadon

According to the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, one accord stresses the inner unanimity of the community, not personal sympathy but material interest in a specific action!

That is actions which constitute the community of the risen Lord magnifying the one Lord!

This unanimity is liberating as being released from the prison of the world and is a gift of God

Acts 4:24 So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them,

Rom 15:6  that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philip 2:2fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

1Peter 3:88 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;[a]

Gal 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

We are all in agreement with and are committed to Jesus Christ, one body we are united in one mind with one voice

This oneness of mind as many of the points we covered alluded to leads to being one with Jesus and God the Father in the Kingdom

We are practicing the Kingdom Of God of Jesus Christ every day in our relationships, with Marriage if we are married, with each other in the church and with Jesus and God the Father through prayer.

John 1:12  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

Rom 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

Rev 19:6-8 And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the[a] Lord God Omnipotent reigns! Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.

Rev 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms[a] of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”

GAL 5:22-26 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

So now we can say that the future we desire is that when the many are truly ONE!!!

One Father = Now is God the Father through Jesus our King and Lord and Brother

Heb 10:10 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Rom 12:16 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

1Cor 12:4-6 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

1Cor 12:12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.

Eph 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all thingsto the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

1Cor 12:14-20For in fact the body is not one member but many.

15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

1Cor 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Rom 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Eph 3:14-15  For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,[a]15 from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

1John 3:1-2Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God![a] Therefore the world does not know us,[b] because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

1Thess 4:16-1716 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

John 17:11  Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me,[a]that they may be one as We are.

One Flesh

John 15:10 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

1Cor 13:1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

You can’t have one flesh if you have different beliefs

One Mind

1John 2:3 Now by this we know that we know Him if we keep His commandments.

2Cor 10:3-5 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

John 17:19 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

Eph 4:14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

Philip 2:2fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.

Isaiah 55:1-3 “Ho! Everyone who thirsts,
Come to the waters;
And you who have no money,
Come, buy and eat.
Yes, come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without price.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance.
Incline your ear, and come to Me.
Hear, and your soul shall live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you—
The sure mercies of David.

Matt 6:16-21  “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.[a]

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

One Spirit

Eventually, all humanity will have a choice to be part of the one Kingdom, with one spirit, mind and love acting as one people under and in Jesus Christ as His family!

ὁμοθυμαδόν.

This word denotes the inner unity of a group of people engaged in an externally similar action. It can thus be rendered “with one mind.” Worth noting is the fact that it often occurs along with statements about the number and place of participation, e.g., πάντες (Philo Leg. Gaj., 356; Ac. 1:14; 2:1 K 5:12) and ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό (Ac. 2:1). The θυμός in which the unanimity consists may be anger (Philo Flacc., 144), fear (Jdt. 15:2), gratitude (Wis. 10:20), etc. The earliest (e.g., Aristoph. Av., 1015) and later the most common use (e.g., Ditt. Syll.3, 742, 14; 1104, 28 f.) is in the political field (Ac. 12:20). Here it confers particular weight on the decision of a corporate body (Ac. 15:25). In the religious field it occurs in Judaism (Philo Flacc., 122; 3 Macc. 5:20) and the NT, only Ac. apart from R. 15:6.

Varied though the use is, two common observations may be made, first in respect of secular Gk., then in respect of the NT, where they are of theological significance. First. the term does not denote the personal sympathy of those participating, but material interest in a specific action. Demosth. (Or., 10, 59) calls upon the people to set aside personal feelings and instead work ὁμοθυμαδόν to resist the plans of Philip. Secondly, this common material concern is not based upon a similarity of inclination or disposition but upon an event which comes on a group from without (e.g., the hostility of Philip in Demosth.) and provokes a common reaction.

In the NT ὁμοθυμαδόν is used to stress the inner unanimity of the community. The term occurs in connection with the actions which constitute the community of the risen Lord, namely, listening to apostolic teaching (Ac. 8:6; 20:18 vl.)3 and prayer (1:14; 2:1, 46; 4:24; 5:12; R. 15:6). ὁμοθυμαδόν is here almost a fixed term in the vocabulary of the community, and its use in the life of political communities forms a significant background. Christian unanimity, too, has its root elsewhere than in a similar disposition on the part of Christians. We are well acquainted with the many personal and material tensions in the first congregations. But these tensions are continually transcended when the community addresses itself to the magnifying of the one Lord (R. 15:6). Unanimity is an event; it constantly needs a new γίγνεσθαι (Ac. 15:25). This unifying worship is not the expression of a religious disposition of man; it is the response to God’s action for the world and the community in Christ (e.g., the ascension in Ac. 1:14; liberation from prison in 4:24). Unanimity is thus a gift of God to the praise of God.

Heidland[4]

31.23 ὁμοθυμαδόν: pertaining to mutual consent or agreement—‘with one mind, by common consent, unanimously.’ οὗτοι πάντες ἦσαν προσκαρτεροῦντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν τῇ προσευχῇ ‘all these continued in prayer with one mind’ Ac 1:14. In a number of languages ‘with one mind’ would need to be rendered as ‘prayed for the same things’ or ‘said the same in their prayers.’ ἔδοξεν ἡμῖν γενομένοιςμαδὸν ἐκλεξαμένοις ἄνδρας πέμψαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ‘we unanimously agreed to choose some messengers to send to you’ Ac 15:25. The expression ‘we unanimously agreed’ may also be rendered as ‘we were in agreement that.’[5]

Old Testament

61           אֶחַד (ʾeḥad) one, same, single, first, each, once, fem. אַחַת (ʾaḥat).

This word occurs 960 times as a noun, adjective, or adverb, as a cardinal or ordinal number, often used in a distributive sense. It is closely identified with yāḥad “to be united” and with rōʾš “first, head,” especially in connection with the “first day” of the month (Gen 8:13). It stresses unity while recognizing diversity within that oneness.

ʾeḥad can refer to a certain individual (Jud 13:2) or a single blessing (Gen 27:38). Solomon alone was chosen by the Lord (I Chr 29:1). The notion of uniqueness is also found in II Sam 7:23 and Ezk 33:24 (for this verse with reference to God, see below). The phrase “in a single day” can refer to the suddenness of judgment (Isa 10:17; 47:9) or blessing (Isa 66:8).

Adverbially, ʾeḥad means “once” or “one time” (II Kgs 6:10). God solemnly swore to David “one time” that his descendants and throne would last forever (Ps 89:35 [H 36]). In Hag 2:6 the Lord warned that he would shake heaven and earth “once more in a little while.” Yet this prediction of the overthrow of nations probably included a near as well as a far fulfillment (cf. Heb 12:26). The expression “in one day” denotes the swiftness of the Lord’s acts (Isa 9:14 [H 13]; Zech 3:9).

Sometimes the phrase “as one man” can mean “all at once” (Num 14:15), but when Gideon was told he would defeat Midian “as one man” it probably meant “as easily as a single man” (Jud 6:16). The phrase can also refer to a nation aroused to take united action against gross injustice (Jud 20:8; I Sam 11:7). Zephaniah’s mention of people serving God “with one shoulder” (3:9) likely means “shoulder to shoulder,” solidly united. Likewise in Ex 24:3 “with one voice” expresses that all Israel was involved in entering into the Covenant with Yahweh.

The concept of unity is related to the tabernacle, whose curtains are fastened together to form one unit (Ex 26:6, 11; 36:13), Adam and Eve are described as “one flesh” (Gen 2:24), which includes more than sexual unity. In Gen 34:16 the men of Shechem suggest intermarriage with Jacob’s children in order to become “one people.”

Later, Ezekiel predicted that the fragmented nation of Israel would someday be reunited, as he symbolically joined two sticks (37:17). Once again Judah and Ephraim would be one nation with one king (37:22). Abraham was viewed as “the one” from whom all the people descended (Isa 51:2; Mal 2:15), the one father of the nation.

Diversity within unity is also seen from the fact that ʾeḥad has a plural form, ʾăḥādîm. It is translated “a few days” in Gen 27:44; 29:20, and Dan 11:20. In Gen 11:1 the plural modifies “words”: “the whole earth used the same language and the same words.” Apparently, it refers to the same vocabulary, the same set of words spoken by everyone at the tower of Babel. The first “same” in Gen 11:1 is singular, analogous to “the same law” of the Passover applying to native-born and foreigner (Ex 12:49; cf. Num 15:16), or to the “one law” of sure death for approaching the Persian king without invitation (Est 4:11).

In the famous Shema of Deut 6:4, “Hear, O Israel … the Lord is one,” the question of diversity within unity has theological implications. Some scholars have felt that, though “one” is singular, the usage of the word allows for the doctrine of the Trinity. While it is true that this doctrine is foreshadowed in the ot, the verse concentrates on the fact that there is one God and that Israel owes its exclusive loyalty to him (Deut 5:9; 6:5). The nt also is strictly monotheistic while at the same time teaching diversity within the unity (Jas 2:19; 1 Cor 8:5–6).

[The lexical and syntactical difficulties of Deut 6:4 can be seen in the many translations offered for it in the NIV. The option “the LORD is our God, the LORD alone” has in its favor both the broad context of the book and the immediate context. Deuteronomy 6:4 serves as an introduction to motivate Israel to keep the command “to love (the Lord)” (v. 5). The notion that the Lord is Israel’s only God suits this command admirably (cf. Song 6:8f). Moreover, these two notions, the Lord’s unique relation to Israel and Israel’s obligation to love him, are central to the concern of Moses’ addresses in the book (cf. Deut 5:9f.; 7:9; 10:14ff., 20f., 13:6; 30:20; 32:12). Finally, Zechariah employs the text with this meaning and applies it universally with reference to the eschaton: “The Lord will be king over all the earth; in that day the Lord will be (the only) one, and His name (the only) one” (14:9 NASB).

In Job 31:15 and Mal 2:10 the word is used to denote that one and the same God created all men. The reference to the one Shepherd in Eccl 12:11 probably indicates that God is the only source of wisdom. b.k.w.]
