How could Galileo, Netflix, and the Pharisees be connected in any way? In all 3 scenarios, existing institutions rejected the overwhelming truth. Examples of Catholicism rejecting scientific findings of Galileo, Blockbuster ignoring the business threat of Netflix, and the Pharisees rejecting the truth of Christ. Mankind and even Christians today have great difficulty in departing from tradition to accept God’s truth, and it takes the miracle of the Holy Spirit to completely renew our minds and hearts to accept and grow in God’s knowledge and new understanding.
Sermon Notes
The truth was dismissed by Galileo, Blockbuster, and the Pharisees.
The Catholic church though Galileo was a heretic because they couldn’t comprehend his new discoveries.
Luke 5:27-39
Luke 5:36-39
Luke 5:31 → The Pharisees could not comprehend Jesus looking through their lenses.
They could not put new wine in old wineskins. Jesus wasn’t coming just to patch things up, he was bringing restored truth. Jesus Christ was bringing graduate work. The pre-res was the 10 Commandments and Jesus was bringing graduate level work. It is new and different and it is beyond where you have been.
Jesus was coming to affect the heart. Christ was coming to impart new truth, the mind of God.
Luke 5:1-11
In chapter 6, the Pharisees are seeing Jesus walk on the Sabbath. They were always waiting to trip up Jesus. They then see Him healing on the Sabbath, the Pharisees were then enraged. Jesus then appoints His disciples to be apostles.
Matt. 15:4-6 → Jesus noting that the Pharisees allowed giving to the temple over your own family.
New wineskins are able to handle new wine.
God went to a clean slate without the old baggage. God went with new guys that He could work with. Even if we’ve been in the church for 30-40 years, God’s Spirit is the great equalizer and eraser.
1 Cor. 1:27-31 → God has chosen the foolish and weak. God is looking for teachability, the Pharisees were set.
New Wineskins are meant to be stretched. We are not meant to be static, we are meant to grow and develop.
2 Pet. 4:17 → God isn’t looking to become squeezed into our life -- He wanted to be part of our lives. Grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.
As God’s knowledge becomes part of us, we become stretched and our heart is transformed.
New Wine Tastes Funny
It was a process to know the Lord. Sometimes it takes time to get out of our comfort zone. For a lot of us, it’s easy to stay in our comfort zone and stay in the rut.
Rom. 12:2 → Do not be conformed to this world - but, be “transformed”. We need to have a oneness in thought and mind. Each week, the renewing of our mind is here. It is often to drift in our lives. Sometimes we create rules for God without thinking about what is in the Bible.
Luke 5:36
God doesn’t need the best, but looks at material and adaptable and will make something glorious.
