In the book of Ezra, we find Ezra's reaction to the sin some of God's people had fallen into. In his reaction we see three godly ways that we should react to sin, both ours and those of others. First, we must use Scripture to recognize what is sin; next we should mourn over sin and the great harm it does to ourselves and others; and finally, we must repent before God and throw ourselves on His great mercy.​
