By Sunday evening, 60 staff had arrived from 14 states and 93 campers from 21 states. With 153 campers and staff together in the dining hall, happy conversations and laughter filled the room.

After dinner, all moved to the chapel for camper orientation. Activity staff introduced themselves to the campers and presented the activities that the teens could look forward to.

On Monday morning, camp activities began with a Christian Living class. Each following day began with the same spiritual foundation. The Christian Living theme was broken down into five sub-themes and was emphasized from the beginning of the day in the dorm to the end of each day.

While the teaching and implementation of God’s way was the primary emphasis of camp, there was still plenty of time for activities and fellowship.

Campers enjoyed archery, journalism, dance, riflery, rock climbing and rappelling, low ropes, softball, Speedaway, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, gaga ball and volleyball. Campers were also able to earn proficiency awards in archery, riflery, rock climbing, softball, swimming and volleyball.

One of the unique opportunities enjoyed at Camp Pinecrest is the observation of the Fourth of July. Campers and staff enjoyed star-spangled decorations in the dining hall and the staff donned Fourth of July hats, ties and other adornments. The day ended with a fireworks display over the camp lake.

After a busy week, everyone relaxed in observance of the Sabbath, with a pleasant day of good meals, spiritual food in Bible study and Sabbath services and time for fellowship.

As sunset arrived, all gathered in the Pinecrest chapel to recognize those who had earned proficiency awards before the final dance. Also at this ceremony, the role of Camp Director was passed from Gary and Liz Smith to the new director and his wife, Mike and Laura Phelps. At the Saturday night dance, awards were presented to the male and female campers, Gabe Holzwarth and Emily Wood, who had best exemplified God’s way of life in their conduct throughout camp and in the dorm.

Camp Pinecrest 2019 was once again a most positive and successful week. With the bonds developed during the week, it was with sadness that everyone headed for home. However, camp ended on a positive note. This year, for the first time since 2011, a large number of recent high school graduates served on staff along with many other young adults. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the camp and having young volunteers paves the way for future leadership.

The development of young leadership combined with camp veterans ensures that 2020 will once again be a successful year at Camp Pinecrest!
