Blantyre

Blantyre is Malawi’s financial, commercial and transport center and the home of the Malawi Stock Exchange. Although Lilongwe is the nation’s administrative capital, with more restaurants, hotels and bars than Lilongwe, Blantyre is the much busier and livelier central business district of Malawi.

Blantyre has a rich heritage. It was named after the birthplace of Scottish explorer and missionary, David Livingstone. Blantyre is one of the oldest urban centers in eastern and southern Africa. It gained municipal status as far back as 1895, while work on St. Michael and All Angels church in Blantyre began even earlier in 1888.

Blantyre has a pleasant climate set in a range of hills at about 1,000 meters above sea level, with 3-4 months of rain per year. This enriches the climate and makes it the perfect gateway to the unspoiled south of Malawi. Many visitors fly to Blantyre and stay overnight before heading off to the Majete National Wildlife Reserves or to the Zomba and Mulanje Mountains.

Visitors can plan to fly into Blantyre’s Chileka International Airport, the main hub of Air Malawi.
