A Good Tree Cannot Bear Bad Fruit Jesus Christ declared to his disciples. I was reminded of that lesson tonight when I examined the apples and pears on the trees in our backyard. The fruit looks good so according to Jesus the tree must be good and that is no accident. David compared the good tree to a "blessed man" in Psalms chapter one: "He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its fruit in its season whose leaf also shall not whither; And whatever he does shall prosper" (1:3). Why is this so? What makes him grow? We find the answer in the previous verse: "His delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night" (1:2). The Psalmist's message is consistent with Paul's message about Christ and the Church: "Christ also loved the Church and gave himself for it, that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of the water by the word" (Ephesians 5:26). The life sustaining nature of "water of the word" is confirmed by Jesus Christ: "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). The good tree we learn is and must be firmly rooted in the Word of God.
