Most of us are likely familiar with the words of the old song -- “Joshua fought the battle of Jericho.!
The Bible is replete with instructions and exhortations about coming OUT of sin. Equally important, however, is the concept of AVOIDING sin in the first place!
Some of us have been striving now for a number of years – some even for decades – to put sin OUT of our lives. Ironically, some of us may still be trying to put some of the same sins out of our lives – year after year! Let’s think about it – just HOW does the battle against the forces of sin seem to be going for you – and for me? Do we actually know? Do we experience more defeats than victories?
So “ Joshua fought the battle of Jericho!” Or did he?
The story was not – and is not – simply a great historical Biblical event. The riveting account and lessons from the Battle of Jericho still continue powerfully emphasize the meaning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. We associate these days as teaching us to come out of sin, but are we also cognizant of the more hidden lesson as well?
JERICHO – First, there was strategy. The problem? How to conquer the seemingly “unconquerable” superbly designed fortress city? For hundreds of years many military forces had tried – but ultimately failed to conquer this great ancient city.
Second, what was Jericho’s weakness? Or, what there NO weakness? No other nation or military force had been able to discern or perceive – nor perhaps would have even believed – source of Jericho’s deadly and insidious spiritual weakness!
The lessons we can learn from the ancient battle of Jericho can galvanize our spiritual lives!
