Light and darkness are used throughout scripture as metaphors for good and evil, righteousness and unrighteousness, holiness and ungodliness.  Light is spiritual purity in truth and knowledge while darkness is ignorance of divine things, a lack of spiritual perception or misplaced spiritual understanding.​  Christ is identified as "The Light" and we must be awakened by that Light and stay awake as we allow Jesus Christ to live within us.
