The Apostle John provides powerful words to the elect to abide in Truth and Love that are just as relevant for today living in the latter days as they were when John wrote this letter in the last part of the 1st century.

Sermon Notes

    1. Background on 2 John.
      1. After the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the Apostle John seemed to make Ephesus his home base.
      1. In the church, the date 2 John was written between 90 and 95 AD.
      1. In the Church, we have quoted Jesse Hurlbut, the Baptist historian who called the period from 68 to 100 AD. The Age of Shadows because little is known of this church period.
      1. Hurlbut’s The Story of the Christian Church  (ch. V, pp. 41-43)
      1. Chapter 5 is called “The Age of Shadows,” and this is the period from 68 to 100 a.d. because we know the least about the church at that time.
      1. “For fifty years after St. Paul's life a curtain hangs over the church, through which we strive vainly to look; and when at last it rises, about 120 A.D. with the writings of the earliest church-fathers, we find a church in many aspects very different from that in the days of St. Peter and St. Paul.”
      1. We see from what John wrote in 1 John that during the 90 - 95 A.D. time frame, false teachers appeared in the church, and John had to address the false teachings being introduced.
      1. 1,2,3 John and Jude provide a glimpse of what was happening in this “age of shadow” period.
