This is an overview of and brief history of Gnosticism, which is the modern term for the number one set of heresies that infiltrated the early New Testament church. Much of what is written in the New Testament epistles was an effort to refute the Gnostic influences. And those ideologies still greatly affect today’s “Christianity,” aka Hellenistic Christianity. The worst heresy is its antinomianism (anti = against; nomos = law) and “cheap grace” which appeals to our rebellious human nature (Romans 8:7).
