We can gather several lessons from John 13 and the footwashing. We must learn to love as Jesus loved—with humility, servanthood and self-sacrifice (John 13:34; 15:12-13). The number one sign of God's people is their love for one another (John 13:35 and much of the book of 1 John). Godly love involves compassion, sympathy and empathy. We can gain understanding and inspiration from devoted caregivers and compassionate people in service professions like many nurses. The footwashing symbolizes our responsibility to “wash one another’s feet” every day of the year (John 13:13-17; Matthew 25:31-46).
