Our spiritual journey through life is like a trail filled with dangers and adventures that lay ahead with each step we take. We need a guide to stay on the trail; we need a bridge to cross a chasm. Our God, who is our spiritual parent, provides the path to walk on, the guide and the bridge. Our human parents are part of that path and guide. The fifth commandment is a very positive one, and it is a spiritual bridge. We should consider: why this commandment is important for us today; why we ought to keep it; how do we honor our parents; and how to teach this act of honor. We will come to realize we will never outgrow the need to keep the fifth commandment.
