A discussion on the theme of restoration in Romans 5, showing that Christ died for the ungodly, rescuing them from their condemned sinful condition, and much more.
Sermon Notes
How would you summarize the Bible in 25 words or less? A book of historic stories of people of faith. A story of God’s love or God’s coming Kingdom.
Another major theme is restoration, give back what you’ve taken and a little extra.
Paul used the term “much more” in Romans 5 to contrast something greater to something lesser.
Lev. 6:1 → Principle of restoration, give above what you have taken.
1.) Restoration through Christ’s death.
Romans 5:8 → While we are sinners, Christ died for us. Christ did something for us that we could not accomplish ourselves.
Romans 5:9 → Much more, we’ve been justified by His blood.
We come to this time of year and are humbled by Jesus Christ.
Rom. 8:32 → God did the greater thing and sacrificed His son for us, won’t He give everything to us.
Matt. 6:35 → God has given us His life and will provide. God will save us from wrath and judgement. If He would do this if we had nothing to offer to Him, think of what He’ll do not that we are a child of His.
God took us when there was nothing, think of what he’ll do now.
John 5:24
2.) Reconciliation through Christ.
We were reconciled when we were enemies, now we will be saved by His life.
Rom. 5:10
2 Cor. 5:21
Heb 7:25 → He is able to save those who come to Him. Christ is about interceding on our behalf.
Rev. 1:18 → Our hope is in His life.
John 14:19
3.) The free gift abounds to many.
Rom. 5:15
Jesus Christ is restoring to what is lost through the actions of one man - Adam.
Through one decision, many have experienced death. This gift is a way to overcome death.
I Peter 1:15 → Be holy because I am Holy.
4.) Jesus Christ will destroy death and will set up grace and righteousness in life.
Rom. 5:17
Jesus Christ has given us HIs Spirit and Grace and we need to give back.
Rom. 6:22
5.) Grace abounded much more
Rom. 5:20
We realize how much the distance there is between God and us.
He has come and given us grace and reconciled us.
Because God has restored us, we live to give that much back and more.
