Pastor Bart Bornhorst gives a message about the importance of assembling for Sabbath services. We can be distracted while living in a wealthy country causing us to fall into a spiritual strap.

Sermon Notes

We live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world.  The poorest of the country are doing much better than the rest of the world.  We are very blessed to be living in the United States.  On the surface, we seem to be living well.  In reality, our wealth can be a spiritual detriment.  When life is easy, human nature doesn’t see and feel the need for God.

God knew it would be a spiritual trap.

Deut. 8:6 → A lot of natural wealth is promised as God led his people to the promised land.

Be careful that you don’t forget God.  Our country is blessed because of God’s covenant to our forefathers.  But, these physical blessing are a trap.

What percentage of people attend church in the USA?  About 40% say they attend, but fewer than 20% say they attend.  More than 4000 church close their doors every year.  After 9/11 church attendance spiked, but then decreased.

Human nature is motivated by need.  When human nature is comfortable and relaxed, it is easy to turn away from God.

Why is it important to gather on the Sabbath.

1.)  Our assembly is commanded

Matt. 16:18 → Ecclesia - Our church.  Christ says He will call out those to assmble there.

Acts 19:32

James 2:

Matt. 23:37 → God wants to gather his children as a hen gathers her chicks.

Lev. 23:3 → Sabbath is a holy convocation.

2.)  Christ and our Spiritual forefathers set the example

Mark 1:21

Mark 6:2 → He began to teach on the Sabbath.

Luke 13:10

Luke 4:16-20

Acts 2:1 → On Pentecost, they were all together in one place.

Acts 13:13 → Paul went into the synagogue and sat.  He taught the message of Jesus Christ and His gospel message.

Acts 17:

Why did Paul go to the synagogue every Sabbath day?

1 Cor. 11:1

3.)  For encouragement and fellowship (3:46)

2 Cor. 1:3-4 → Blessed be the God of comfort and mercies that we may be able to comfort those as well.  The spirit of God dwells in each of us.

Gal. 6:2 → Bear one another burdens.

Many look to services and a bright spot in their week.  Come to services looking to build the love with one another.

We should remember the shut-ins and put them on a schedule.  What is pure, sincere worship of God.

James 1:26-27 → When we come together, do we control our tongue?  We need to bridle your tongue.  We are to visit orphans and widows in trouble.

Do we see and feel the need to come here on the Sabbath day?   We need each other.

Matt. 18:20 → Where 2 or 3 are gathered in my  Name, I am with them.

Heb. 10:24-25 Think of ways to motivate each other to acts of love and good works.
