"Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near; Who lie on beds of ivory, Stretch out on your couches, Eat lambs from the flock And calves from the midst of the stall" (Amos 6:4). What is so woeful about eating lamb or veal in your comfortable recliner? How does this seemingly innocuous form of relaxation "cause the seat of violence to come near"? Why would it warrant a merciful God to "raise up a nation against...Israel" to afflict reclining partiers "from the entrance of Hamath to the Valley of Arabah" (Amos 6:14)? Perhaps there is more to the story.
