As I begin the process of writing checks, typically the first one I write is our tithe check. When doing this, it is easy to take that check, place it in the envelope and set it aside with the others as if it were just another bill to be paid. It is at this point that I like to stop and offer up a quick prayer of thanksgiving for the opportunity we have to contribute to the work of God. Tithing is one way we can be personally involved in preaching the gospel. By taking the time to ask God to bless what we have to give, we change tithing from being the mundane task of writing a check to a reminder of the blessing of serving others whom God is calling. Each time we receive a Good News magazine, I peruse the articles to see what is in the current issue. My favorite section, and the first that I read, is "Letters From Our Readers." When I read these letters, I am often reminded of the fact that years ago others were faithful in tithing, thus opening a door for my husband and me to be called. I know how much we needed hope in what seemed like a hopeless world. It is a gift to be able to do our part to help others learn that God does indeed offer hope. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." The next time you find yourself writing out your tithe check or making an electronic tithing transaction online, take time to thank God for the ability to be involved in His work. Ask God to bless what you are giving so that it can be used effectively. Remember to "rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). UN
