There are four basic steps to beginning a lifetime of Biblical studies: 1) pray for guidance; 2) take time daily to study the Bible; 3) read the Bible through once to get the story flow; 4) look for the continuity of thought and instructions that reveal God's way.

[Gary Petty] We have an email that someone sent to our Beyond Today box. This is from Pastor Charles, he says, "How do I build a relationship with God's Word?"

Well, Charles, the first thing you do is you pray. You go to God and ask Him for guidance, ask Him for direction, ask Him to help you understand what He wants to teach you out of His Word, out of the Bible.

Then you must take daily time to go to that Word and study it. Set aside some special time every day—whatever is your best time. You know, the morning, the late evening—whatever is your best time. And a lot of times, what we do is we give God our worst time. Figure out your best time. Maybe it's your lunch time. But take that time, get your Bible and study it.

And then a lot of times the first thing you do is read the Bible from cover to cover. See how God has interacted with human kind over a long period of time, over centuries, and the lessons that He teaches throughout that Bible, which will give you and lead you to understanding a continuity.

There is a continuity to the Scripture. What God taught people like Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, what God taught people like David, what God taught people in the New Testament whether it's Mary or Peter or John, it's all the same basic truth. And it's the same truth for us today. Look for that continuity and God will help you build a relationship with His Word and through that a relationship with Him and His Son Jesus Christ.
