The little things make a big difference.
[Steve Myers] The other day I was hanging up my towel on the towel rack on our bathroom, pushed down a little bit too hard, and it fell off. Well, I could have ran down and got a screwdriver and put that thing back on, but I thought, I'll do it later. Well, then, that night I kind of forgot about it until I went back up to the bathroom again, realized it was off. Well, I didn't do it then, either. I thought, Oh, I'll get to it, it's not that big a deal, it'll just take a couple minutes. So I kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off, until finally, probably about three weeks later, I finally got that towel rack back up again. I mean, it was just a little minor little thing. But you know what? I finally got that done. I could cross it off my to-do list. And it felt pretty good to take that one little item off the list.
I got to thinking about that a little bit. Isn't it nice to be able to do those little things? To cross those little things off the list, that you accomplished something, even if it's the tiniest things? Because what I found, if I don't put up the towel rack, I've got nowhere to put my towel, and I needed that, as little as it may seem. And those little things do make a big difference.
In fact, if we want to make a day better, even a good day better, we need to do those little things. Maybe it's hanging that towel rack. Maybe it's just being nice. Can we go the extra mile to just open the door for someone, greet them? Be nice to people. Be courteous, even to people that we don't even know. Doesn't take much, but it can make a huge difference. We can brighten up someone else's day when we do those – when we give words of encouragement. How about just calling up someone that maybe you haven't seen in church for a while, see how they're doing? Encourage them, help them. You can write a card – maybe a congratulations card, a get well card. Other things like that really make a difference in people's lives.
In fact, it reminds me of a passage that's over in Luke. In the book of Luke, we're told very clearly that these little things make a big difference. It says, "He who is faithful in what's least, is also faithful in much" (Luke 16:10). And so, God expects us to do these little things. He expects us to put these things into practice in our life.
I mean, can we strive to be considerate today, maybe more than we were yesterday? I think those are attainable goals. Can we be cheerful on the outside, even though, you know, your back is hurting today? You know, I think we can do those kinds of things. Can we give maybe a small gift of encouragement to someone? Can we reach down and grab that little one at church and hug them and talk to them for a little bit, establish a better relationship? You see, those things don't take much time, but they make a huge difference, and it just sure adds to the fun of life. It adds to the goodness. It makes a good day even better. And you know, when you think about it, what is it about it that makes a good day better? It actually helps, I think, make us better.
That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.
