Can you trust God?

If I were asked this question I would respond firmly with a “yes!”

Why? Because Proverbs 3:5-7 says:

“Trust in the Lordwith all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.”

At work a couple of weeks ago I talked about God with my colleagues. As I quoted a scripture from the book of Revelation, one colleague responded by saying, “Revelation is a controversial book which shouldn't be part of the Bible.” Later he made clear that he believes that the Bible was written by man not by God. Yet he believes in God and professes to be a Christian.

Taking steps

How can you trust and believe in God the Father and Jesus Christ who have made all things, and not the Bible?

I firmly believe that the all-powerful God indeed has the capability and loving care to instruct us through the Bible, His holy word. However, I didn’t always believe in God as firmly as now.

My initial question was, “Is God to be trusted?” But the real questions we should ask ourselves are, “How do we learn to trust God? How do we build faith?” Here are two steps I take each day to continue to develop the ability to trust God:

1. “Prove all things and hold fast that which is good (1 Thessalonians 5:21).” It is of utmost importance to do so with an open mind, believing in God and that He will help your unbelief (Mark 9:24).

2. Pray for all things. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). Every breath we take is a gift from God, especially if you suffer from asthma.

Growing faith

These two steps helped me to answer in my own mind my colleague’s doubts about the Bible. I searched for the truth through prayer and God’s understanding so that my faith in God would grow more firmly.

It is not the problems that we face each day that make us children of the Most High God Almighty, but how we face those problems. God’s word is trustworthy and gives us the wisdom to surmount any obstacle.
