Change the terms, remove the stigma of shame, and all behavior is equal. That's what is happening with two critical issues today.

Last night I was watching Bill O'Reilly on Fox News. He was discussing the culture wars and specifically why traditional voices are losing the battle on two key issues: abortion and same-sex marriage. Since I am not a regular viewer of the program, but am always watching the ongoing culture wars, I stopped to hear what he had to say.

On the subject of abortion, he brought up a key fact I did not know. Science, he said, has confirmed that at the moment of conception in the female, human DNA is present. That being the case, there is a "human presence" from that instant. We are then talking about life and what will eventually develop into a distinct human throughout nine months of gestation.

This is consistent with our stand on abortion here at Beyond Today. Life begins at conception. Abortion is the taking of human life. Abortion is murder. We covered this in a recent Beyond today program entitled, The Sanctity of Life. O'Reilly even showed recent polls indicating more people are pro-life today than just a few years ago.

The terms used in the abortion debate have completely altered the reality of what is being done. Call the unborn child "fetal tissue" and you depersonalize the matter. Argue for "women's rights" and you ignore the right of the child. Hide the destruction of human life behind the term "pro choice" and you don't have to worry about guilt. Change the terms and there is no sin.

The second half of the discussion dealt with same-sex marriage. Here, the "Bible thumpers" are losing the argument, he said, and I totally agree with him—and I am a Bible thumper. I concede that this argument is over in America. Polls show a majority of people accept that gays and lesbians are due equal rights when it comes to marriage. Recent arguments before the United States Supreme Court seek to establish as a constitutional right and at the same time redefine the traditional definition of marriage. They seek the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

My colleague here at Beyond Today Media, Mitchell Moss, has been writing on the subject of same-sex marriage and attracting a bit of attention for the effort. We are discussing these hot subjects with fascination. American culture has radically changed in the past ten years. It became very clear after the elections of last November that the nation has passed a point in tolerance for personal morality that was once considered sin.

I fully understand the arguments being made for same sex-marriage are in the civil arena. The Biblical or religious morality of the issue is not even admitted into the debate. It is an unfortunate reality that no Supreme Court justice is going to ask that a friend of the court briefing from the writings of the Apostle Paul on homosexuality be admitted for the justices to consider (what an interesting thought—best saved for another blog post).

However, being a "Bible thumper," I am concerned. That the Biblical view has been pushed out of the public discussion is a bad omen for the future. Make no mistake, the Bible condemns homosexual behavior in clear terms. The Bible also condemns adulterous behavior between heterosexual couples. It also condemns fornication (a completely unknown term to most today), which is sex outside of the marriage covenant. Lastly, the Bible gives clear teaching that marriage between a man and a woman is God's original intent. It does not take a Bible scholar to read the book and understand all the above, despite the ignorant and misinformed ideas to the contrary!

This Bible thumper has diminishing patience for the lack of clear thinking founded upon a Biblical morality. That same book has something to say about the patience God has for a nation saturated in sin—another unknown term for a modern world.

Hello Wayne, I am a man who is a member of the United Church of God who struggles with same-sex attraction. I understand where you are coming from on the issue of gay marriage. I know that humanly, it seems logical and right. However, God reveals in scripture that what often seems right to us(all of humankind)in our everyday way of thinking and doing things leads ultimately lead to death (Proverbs 14:5). God, as our Creator, reveals to man that His thoughts and ways are higher than man's natural thoughts and ways of reasoning (Isaiah 55:8-9). Unless humankind repents of sin, we all live by time and chance. Ultimately, the natural results of life without coming to understand, respect and follow our Creator, is death (Luke 13:1-5, Romans 6:23). As mentioned in the reply message above from United Church of God, the Church of God preaches and teaches from the spiritual point-of-view of the Bible - the inspired Word of God. Our Creator has a Plan of redemption for humankind - through the Lord, Jesus Christ, who died to save all of us. That loving and kind plan involves His Church right now and also the future establishment of God's powerful and compassionate Kingdom over this earth - to lead humankind out of our problems and sins. God created Adam and Eve - male and female - by designing them to be physically, sexually and emotionally interdependent as a bonded "one flesh" unit in marriage. Our first Parents - male and female - were our Creator's physical, sexual and emotional "template" design to create a secure and loving family environment for each other, for their children... and by example... generations to follow. When Adam and Eve listened to Satan (the Serpent described in Genesis 3) and stopped listening to God, things began to go awry... toward the state of worldwide distress and problems that humankind experiences today (Genesis 1 through 3). Our Creator has a wonderful plan to redeem humankind - and save us all from eternal death. He wants to freely give us eternal life - if we repent of sin and respectfully learn to love and follow Him. The coming Kingdom of God and the loving rule of our Savior, Jesus Christ, is humankind's true hope. If you're interested, please take time to read the recent article in the Nov/Dec 2012 issue of the Good News (on the UCG website) about the human side of homosexuality. Michael

...and they will turn their ears away from the truth [the Bible], and be turned aside to fables [excuses for whatever lifestyle they want to indulge in].” Whether gays can get legally married is not the main issue. The only sexual relationship that God approves is that between a man and woman who are married to each other. God condemns all other heterosexual sex (both premarital and extramarital), all homosexual sex, all incest, all polygamy, all pedophilia, all prostitution, all bestiality, and even all sexual lust (including viewing pornography). Legalizing homosexual “marriage” would be a huge accomplishment for the gay agenda in its attempt to legitimize homosexual sex and gain society’s approval of it. We’ve already seen many breakdowns in the standards of society (resulting in the skyrocketing divorce rate and countless other ills). What will be next? Many people think they would be “happier” if they could legally and freely engage in polygamy, incest, pedophilia, prostitution or bestiality. Should society deny them their “right” to “happiness?” True happiness won’t come to those with same-sex attraction simply by refraining from homosexual sex, but true happiness can come to them if they learn and live by God’s entire plan as revealed in the Bible. The Bible is our Creator’s perfect revelation to humanity for how to gain health, happiness, hope, prosperity and peace of mind in this life and how to qualify for everlasting life after death in the Paradise of God. Jesus Christ commanded His Church to go into all the world and preach “the gospel” -- His plan and purpose for mankind (Mark 16:15). We’re trying our best to do that.

Dear Wayne, Thank you for posting your comment. You wrote a mixture of truth and error and we will try to clarify the issues. Our goal in United Church of God is to love everyone and be forgiving in the same way that God and Jesus Christ love everyone, insomuch that Christ laid down His life for every single person who has ever lived (John 3:16-17; Romans 5:6-10; Mark 12:30-31). The actions of true love are revealed by the Ten Commandments and God’s other spiritual laws that define good versus evil (1 John 2:4-6; 5:3). God wants us to hate evil because evil destroys people’s health and happiness in the long run (Psalm 97:10). Every kind of sexual sin is especially damaging to the mind and heart (1 Corinthians 6:9-20). We “reap what we sow” (Galatians 6:7-8). A godly life reaps rewards in this life and especially in the life to come. Breaking God’s laws brings automatic penalties in this life and in the life to come. We would not be showing love for others if we failed to tell them just what is at stake -- the rewards versus the penalties depending on the lifestyle they choose. We are not involved in politics, we don’t approve of sin (such as multiple divorces or fornication) and we would never water down the Bible to try to be “popular” -- just as Jesus Christ was not trying to be popular. In Isaiah 58:1, God says, “Cry aloud, spare not; lift up your voice like a trumpet; tell My people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” We must be “alarmist” in the sense that we are called to sound the alarm that those who do not repent of their sins are going to eventually suffer dire consequences. But our message is not “negative” -- it is the most positive message in existence. It is the message that if you love and obey God, He will bless you in this life plus give you everlasting life in the glorious Kingdom of God! God holds us responsible to “Preach the word [the Bible]!... Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching” (2 Timothy 4:2). Verses 3-4 say, “For the time will come [today!] when they [people in general] will not endure sound doctrine [respect for the Bible], but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers [they’ll choose to listen to whomever gives approval for their sins]; ...

....what a changed world we live in compared to the world God made for us.....we, as a culture and peoples, accept sin as an every function of life, simply to be 'part of the group' without realizing that sin DOES have an ultimate price; a consequence.....complete death. I cannot imagine living, either in the flesh or as spirit, without Jesus Christ in my life, much less knowing that my sin could mean eternal death....life without Christ. This world has become so corrupt now, that to do wrong/evil is called 'good' and to do good, is now called being an 'outsider'. God made this world for man, but make no mistake about it.....He had a righteous plan for man and HE WILL bring it to fruition, whether the world is ready for it and and accepts it OR NOT!!! God be with us

A co-worker of mine had suggested her church. I knew it was a Church of God but I went to the main ucg website. I stumbled onto this article. I told my co-worker that I was gay. I wanted to start attending church again. I won't attend a church whose purpose is to judge and to make you feel like the world is coming to an end. I have seen too many churches talk too negative about the world. Your little article is just what I want to avoid. Theologians want to talk about how dare gays want to get married. The problem is that you don't propose a solution to a real economic problem that faces gay people because they can't get married. Why couldn't we have a civil marriage and a religious marriage? Both of them would provide the same economic benefits but only the religious marriage would be the religious one. The ironic thing is that atheists get married all of the time. They normally go to the courthouse. But religion is not in the picture. So I guess it is okay for two non-believers to be married as part of a so-called religious institution so long as they are heterosexual but it is not okay for two atheists who happen to be gay to be married. That is discrimination. Jesus was against divorce but I don't see your church wanting to ban divorce. Nor do I see that the divorce rate among Christians is any better than non-Christians. How can people who have been divorced multiple times(and I believe that Jesus would consider divorce to be a sin)like Newt Gingrich somehow think that they can claim a moral high ground against same-sex marriage. Bill O'Reilly was right when he calls it bible-thumping. I realize that you are trying to get members with these conversations. Unfortunately, you are alienating the very people who you say that are trying to reach. Are you teaching about a religion of love and forgiveness, or are you judging people. If same-sex marriage gets wider acceptance, it is not like the world will end. As a church, I would be more concerned with poverty, mental health, etc that could have a real impact on people's lives in your congregation. Thanks Wayne
