Oscar Night Chivalry
I watched the Oscars last night.
It was the first time I had ever consciously decided to watch them. I guess I was watching to see if there was some angle that I could take from which to write about them. Mostly everybody has covered it from all the angles (the fashion, the quality of Seth MacFarlane's hosting, the worthiness of the award recipients, etc.).
So here was my take-away: Hugh Jackman seems like the most stand-up gentleman in Hollywood.
I sensed it in the pre-show red carpet interview he did with Kristen Chenoweth. He just seemed like a genuine, nice, and gentlemanly guy. He's been married to his wife for 17 years (eons in Hollywood marriage terms), and he treated Kristen with dignity and respect while she interviewed him. It probably didn't hurt my impression of him that he was wearing an impeccably tailored and classic tuxedo (I'm an unabashed clothes geek…).
Then to seal his gentlemanly reputation, he ran to Jennifer Lawrence's aid when she tripped on her way up the stairs to receive her award (in the video, he's the silhouette coming in from the crowd at about 00:05 in. Disclaimer: the video is on MTV.com. This is not an endorsement of MTV).
I've never met the guy and have no clue what his personal morals or values are. But the way he carried himself last night put him on my radar as one of the few cultural icons who might actually be somewhat worthy of some respect.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
