Why do some seek a temporary high? The short answer is that they are trying to fill a void in their lives. They go to a wrong source in hope they can fix or better cope with whatever they’re going through.

Recently news outlets here in Ohio published a photo of a man and woman passed out in the front seat of their car. Their backseat passenger was very alert, awake and alone—he was the 4-year-old grandson of the unconscious woman!

The safety director in Cleveland, Ohio, who released the photo said he and others wanted to send a strong message to addicts. They should find safe places for their children when using debilitating drugs. I can add to that: The adults need to seek help!

Seek God and a personal relationship with Him. Don’t go for a temporary fix that will only get worse and wreak havoc on you, your family and others.

More than 30 million Americans are currently struggling with substance abuse or alcoholism. Fatalities, traffic accidents and injuries related to substance abuse take thousands of lives each year, not to mention the accidental overdoses that occur more frequently among prescription drug addicts. Early in 2016 my son-in-law lost a distant cousin and her husband. They were hit head-on by a man who was drunk and going the wrong way on the interstate.

In August, Cincinnati police saw a staggering 200 overdoses. Eight people could not be saved. Besides those who die from overdoses, there are other victims—children, like this 4-year-old—who reap, arguably, much worse consequences. Children who face being taken away from their parents or, if not taken away, being abused, neglected or exposed to harmful drugs themselves.

One 3-month-old from Dayton, Ohio, was born addicted to heroin and spent his first month in a neonatal intensive care unit. The infant was on a morphine drip for that first month. What a terrible way to start life!

In many instances, children who end up in foster care are from drug-addicted parents who can no longer care for them. Many grandparents and other relatives have to take on this additional responsibility.

This problem is not limited to the United States. The problem of alcoholism and drug abuse is rampant in countries around the world.

Looking for a way out

Why does this happen? Because people are looking for an easy way out or a form of escape, not thinking how the people around them will be affected, including their children.

Recovery Connection lists 10 reasons people abuse drugs. Four that affect young and old alike are:

• Feelings of emptiness.  People are looking to fill a void.

• Experimentation. Sometimes people are just looking for an escape from boredom, so they experiment with drugs to get a temporary high.

• These can make you feel good for a while. They can help you relax from the temporary pressure of life.

• Peer pressure. Everyone wants a sense of belonging, and some think drugs or alcohol can help in this.

While working on this article, I talked with Don, one of our delivery men. Don walks with a limp. I never knew why until our recent conversation. He told me that in 1993 he was hit by a drunk driver. His neck was broken, and he lost part of his leg. He is in pain every single day. Don is a victim of someone seeking a temporary fix, a temporary high, with no thought of anyone else.

Because of so many overdoses occurring, police, teachers and workers in the medical field are supplied with Narcan, an antidote that can often revive a victim after an overdose.

This temporary measure may save a life, but it’s no solution. Don told me that he knew a man who worked in an emergency room that treated overdoses. One night they revived an overdose victim, and no sooner had the doctor turned his back than the patient already started trying to shoot up again for his next high.

Where to turn for help

While people will need treatment to overcome this drug and alcohol addiction, the real fix is turning to God for help. He is the only One who can truly fill the emptiness and heal the broken lives. If you have a problem with drugs, do seek professional help, but turn to God for complete emotional healing. His fix is not temporary!

Without Him we are incomplete. Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

All the things you use to fill the void—drugs, material possessions, whatever else—will never make you complete. It is only as good as your next high. Fill your empty hearts with God! Lay down those temporary fixes. Of course get the professional help you need, but do so while seeking God’s help above all. Do it for the sake of your family, your friends and yourself!

Greetings! Believe it or not even chocolate can cause problems. What these substances do is breakdown our vital organs which sends less oxygen and blood to the brain. Without the proper circulation throughout our bodies from our heart with walking as exercise, how do we expect our bodies and brains to function right. A lot of times its guilt for passed sins or abuses throughout our lives. To hide behind the substance abuse is committing suicide. To begin recovery the best question to ask in respect to God is; Why can't I get well? Once you face the mirror and stop denying you have a problem, then do something about it and stop making excuses. This life isn't all about rainbows, sunshine, and lollipops. Life is a struggle of up and down emotions. Without God's Ten Commandments in our lives what do you expect; laughter every time? Life must be lived in balance with God first in out lives. Get off the self destruction wagon and start loving yourself. God does not want to lose any of us humans.
Get a grip of yourself and make a difference towards a more positive peaceful life filled with God's love. God never said it would be easy but worth it when we live His way.

Kathy I loved your comment. It is a great reminder for all of us, that this life does not give us rainbows and sunshine every day. Live in Milford, during the winter months and you will quickly learn about the long gray days. There is way too much mind on the self these days. "the all about me generation." As you mentioned, getting mind off self and onto God and trying to make a difference in others life is what produces healing.

Janet, the title states: "Substance Use Is Not the Answer." You asked one question: "Why does this happen?" Numerous reasons were given.
    You said "Seek God."
But what about the billions of human beings (virtually most of humanity) who can't do that in this present evil world?
And perhaps many did seek God, but it was god, Satan, that was found! Huh?
Why is seeking God so difficult?
"All things are delivered to me of my Father: and NO MAN KNOWETH who the Son is, but the Father; and WHO THE FATHER IS, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will REVEAL HIM." Luke10:22
    No revealing!
What else did Jesus Christ tell us?
"Even the SPIRIT of truth; whom the world CANNOT RECEIVE..." John14:17
    Another huge handicap!
Also:"...it is NOT IN man that walketh TO DIRECT HIS STEPS."Jer10:23
Are humans REALLY that helpless (Gen 6:5;8:21;Gal5:17)? Yes.
"And that they may recover themselves out of the SNARE of the devil, who are TAKEN CAPTIVE by him AT HIS WILL."2Tim2:26
God's WILL allows Satan's will to be done.
Good news for most, Act2:17, is beyond today; it is
God "...in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them..."2Cor5:19
    God's Will be done!

Thanks Gordon, Does that mean that because this is Satan's world we should not encouraged people to seek God? I cannot even imagine God not being there for me. I know He is there for me! I know He delivered me from a nightmare! With all that I had gone through in my life, I dare say I would have committed suicide or have ended up in a mental institution or possible murdered had it not been for God. God is there for anyone who calls on Him , they do not have to wait until the World Tomorrow. In fact I encourage them not to wait until His kingdom comes. I am so grateful for God's love and great mercy to all who seek it.

  • J G

Janet, you may encourage people to seek God all you want, but at this time it is "hands off" from God's perspective for billions of people part of a creation MADE SUBJECT to vanity.
God is not a respecter of persons, but a Bride is being built, but to say that "God is there for anyone who calls on Him?" Most don't know God or God's Will, and verses tells us that God is not there just b/c they call on Him.
For one thing, God HEARS NOT sinners (John 9:31).
Jesus told His disciples: "I pray for them: I pray NOT for THE WORLD, but for THEM which THOU HAST GIVEN ME; for THEY are thine." (John 17:9). Those given to Christ today are only individuals drawn/dragged b/c the Father (John 6:44) willed it.
If God has drawn you, then you will automatically seek Him out...all thanks to the power of God's Spirit within you.
Oh, God still loves all the billions of human beings and, before all is said and done, good news is that God will resolve all abuse.
"To wit, that God was in Christ, RECONCILING THE WORLD unto himself, NOT IMPUTING their TRESPASSES unto them..."2 Cor 5:19
    Now, that's God's love!
So, encourage people, but most substance abusers won't be healed until God's Kingdom comes.

  • Janet Treadway

I know that there are drug abusers who have turned to God. I am sure it is a daily struggle but with God's help all things are possible. They don't have to wait untill God's kingdom is here to see His help and receive it.

In yet another story released on the Washington Post October 28, another overdose with a woman inside her car at the wheel.
The attending officer said that the little 7 year old girl, who was in the back seat with her mom passed out, asked if the police woman would sign her homework so she could take it to school the next day. The child was being more responsible than the adult. The child was placed in protective custody. So heartbreaking the trauma the child will go through, being uprooted from her home. It is an epidemic and we need to pray for those who are effected by these evil drugs. Hopefully parents will get help for the sake of their children.
