We are the only creatures who can talk ourselves into trouble and we are also the only creatures who by talking things over with others can find a way out of trouble. It would be good if we would avoid trouble altogether, but there are inner drives that push us to places we may not want to go under normal circumstances. We can talk ourselves into thinking we love someone or that someone loves us. We can talk ourselves into thinking we deserve more or that life is not fair (and it isn't).

One example of how a person reasons within himself is found in Mark 2:6-7. The scribes were sitting there observing the work Jesus was doing, but convincing themselves that it was blasphemy. They did not consider the marvel and goodness of each of Jesus' deeds. Trouble is that Almighty God can "hear" us reasoning in our own hearts (Mark 2:8). It takes a goodly amount of maturity of the mind and heart for a person to be able to control his thoughts until he gathers all the facts. That is why talking with others can be so helpful. Experience teaches us these great lessons if we are willing and able to hear.

We are the only creatures who have the opportunity to act on reason rather than pure instinct. We have instincts, some okay (to eat, sleep, protect ourselves and family, procreate), some not okay. The latter is what we call "human nature", which is different from animal instincts because it is not true instinct, but our attachment to our sinful nature. Only humans murder one another for reasons beyond protecting our lives and/or homes (territory). Only humans lie, justify, concoct self-serving schemes at other's expense, steal for desire not need (jackals aren't stealing, per se, when they try to grab some of the meat from a lion's kill). We are also the only creatures who contemplate God, our existence, mortality, is there more? Other creatures aren't vain and self absorbed, they don't want mirrors, jewels, makeup, fine cars or big houses; they only seem to show off when courting a mate, but they rely on what God gave them, not on superficial, unnatural decorations or adornments. Animals love unconditionally; humans judge and expect and demand conditions in return for love so human love is impure, by nature. Only humans have freedom to act beyond instinct. Freedom to choose to do good or evil. Evil is born in our hearts, pops into our minds even though not intentionally. Bible says our tongue is our worst enemy so we must work hard to stop our (even unintended) wicked thoughts from taking form...first in words, then in actions. We have the free will to say No to ourselves and others and NOT act on those sinful thoughts that pop into our hearts and minds without invitation or premeditation. We are, indeed, peculiar.
