God appointed mankind to be the caretakers of the earth (Genesis 2:15). This means we have been given both the power to maintain and improve, and the power to destroy. It is a sad commentary on our actions that the soils, rivers, streams and lakes in our world are struggling to recover from the damage we humans have done. As our soils are depleted and nature disrupted, so too human health, vitality and intelligence suffer with them.

No matter what schemes we devise, we will always need fresh water, good food and clean air in order to survive and enjoy life. Conservation means wise use of the earth to the lasting good of mankind. We may feel helpless in the face of development, but we can busy ourselves in our own corners to learn the lessons of taking care of this earth. One day we may have the opportunity to have a huge impact. Now is the time to get ready by caring for what we do own and should cherish.
