We have all heard of the story of Honest Abe, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who was renowned for his honesty. We teach our children to never tell a lie no matter how much it hurts us. Has society lost that true quality of honesty? Have we lost our Honest Abes? Lying is intentionally misleading. Honesty is a core value. When we are not honest with ourselves and with others, we destroy our reputation and lose respect.

He who lives by deceit surely harvests deceit—it does not pay in the long run. More importantly, no matter how many veils we use to cover dishonesty, it still uncovers itself. It cannot be hidden forever. Hebrews 6:18 says, "It is impossible for God to lie." Christians must strive to follow that example of truth. Like David, we can ask God for help in guarding our words (Psalm 141:3). We are called to speak only the truth because God is truth.
