"Nice guys finish last," stated the sportsman Leo Durocher. In sports where people strive to win at any cost, fairness, decency and the qualities of character that we cherish are lost. We often hear of great athletes who cheated through the use of performance-enhancing drugs. In time, we lose interest in sports because the character is lacking.

Recently a star athlete returned all of her medals and admitted she had lied to the world about drug use. What a shame and pity. She did finish first in her races, but she was not a "nice guy." Now she is finishing last and suffering for that wrong choice.

Deuteronomy 25:13-16 clearly reveals the distaste God has for dishonesty—those who deal thus are an abomination to Him. But those who are honest and show the character often referred to as good sportsmanship are winners in God's book.

Leo Durocher was wrong—ultimately nice guys don't finish last.
