Rain in due season, not too much heat, nutrients and quality of seed are all items that affect the outcome. A wise farmer does not take a lot of chances. He sows his seed early in the morning and continues to sow in one form or another all day. He tries to take into account all possible events. He might sow a variety of seed so that if one crop fails or is less, the other may be better and stronger. That is the advice of the Bible to farmers (Ecclesiastes 11:6).

The lesson is applicable to everything we do in life. Being active in our work and taking all possibilities into account leads to success. The success is doubled if everything we do turns out good, but if we have made allowances for some failure, we will always have some success. Sometimes in life we focus too closely on a single direction. If it should fail, we may be devastated. When we "put all our eggs in one basket" we depend on that single success. In a changing world, having some understanding of a variety of things affords insurance to our futures. As the farmer glows with contentment at a successful year, so too anyone who learns this lesson can enjoy the fruits of his labor.
