Most of us have a tendency to give things a “quick fix,” which some call a “lick and a promise.” Our efforts are superficial and the results may look good for the moment, but the deep inner concerns will come back to haunt us. Changing the surface really changes nothing, but facing the changes that are needed can change everything.

Paul was inspired to tell us to examine ourselves and to test ourselves as to whether we are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). The advice is good in all areas of our lives. When we find things that need changing in ourselves and set our mind to making the needed changes, wonders can happen. With some effort and determination, changes that are meaningful and permanent can be ours.
