When to Rebuke
Generally the attempt is made with the hope that something good will come of it. Sometimes, however, the one who does the rebuking is not capable of assessing the situation. Sometimes the person who may truly need rebuke is not about to listen. Wise people listen to rebuke, fools do not (Proverbs 17:10). A fool has found a way to shut his ears to advice, even good advice.
Wise people can learn to discern the attitude of one who needs rebuke. They can also ask if it is their responsibility to rebuke that person. Wisdom teaches us that meddling in a quarrel that is none of our business is asking for trouble (Proverbs 26:17). Knowing when to rebuke is as important as knowing who to rebuke and why they need your intervention. It soon becomes clear whether the person you are trying to help is open to suggestions or comments or not. If yes, you may do some good, if no, then go your way. Always the question in our mind should be "is this the time?" and "am I the person?" as well as "am I right?"
