Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27).

Have you ever given thought to this amazing body that He created in His image after His likeness? The body that we walk around in every day?

The God who created our amazing bodies surely is an amazing, caring, intelligent being.

I began to reflect on this when my daughter Michelle told me a miraculous thing recently. She had just given birth to her first child and, of course, as all new mothers do, she wanted to understand everything about her new baby. She researched articles about how to feed him, how often, and what is best for her to eat while breastfeeding.

While doing her research, Michelle found this amazing article titled “Breastfeeding 'kills baby's pain,'” published in BBC News in July 2006. According to the article, “Breastfeeding may be the ultimate natural painkiller for newborn babies.” A review of research found that breastfeeding newborns helps relieve the pain from a needle prick used to screen their blood for disease.

Breastfed babies appeared to experience less pain than those who were swaddled and given a dummy, or a placebo. The reason given is that breast milk contains a high concentration of a chemical, which could ultimately trigger the production of natural painkillers called endorphins. Even at birth, our Creator made the mom’s body to produce a natural painkiller for their baby. How amazing that our loving Father would care so much even for the newborn baby to create a natural painkiller to relieve the infant’s pain.

This made me reflect on the workings of the rest of our miraculous bodies. Let’s look first at the eyes, through which we behold God’s great beauty. In an article published in Beyond Today magazine, "The Miracle of the Eye," the author states the human eye possesses 130 million light-sensitive rods and cones that convert light into chemical impulses. These signals travel to the brain at a rate of a billion per second.

The article goes on to say that as incredible as the eye is, consider that we have not one but two of them. This matched pair, coupled with an interpretive center in the brain, allows us to determine distances to the objects we see. Our eyes also have the ability to focus automatically by elongating or compressing themselves. They are also inset beneath a bony brow that, along with automatic shutters in the form of eyelids, provide protection for these intricate and delicate organs. That is just the eye.

How about the ears? When sound waves reach the eardrum, they cause the eardrum to vibrate. When the eardrum vibrates, it moves the tiny ossicles from the hammer to the anvil and then to the stirrup. These bones help sound move along on its journey into the inner ear. In addition, the ear helps control balance. More info about how the ear works can be read here.

Now the mouth. The mouth contains complementary parts all its own—the teeth, tongue, and the ducts of the salivary glands—which work together to aid in the ingestion and digestion of food. The mouth also plays a major role in the production of speech through the movements of the tongue, lips and cheeks. Saliva helps to moisten and chemically digest food in the mouth before it is swallowed. Saliva also protects the teeth from decay by digesting and washing away tiny bits of food that become stuck to the teeth.

There are so many amazing things about the body. I often think of how awesome God is in His creation of our fingers and how they function when I have to grab several bags with my fingers. How awesome that our fingers can be moved to grip something and then used to feed ourselves, with the aid of our elbows bending.

Our legs are made to aid us in walking, along with the help of our two feet and our toes. So many amazing things about our body cause me to reflect on how great and intelligent the engineer was who created us—I have not even covered the respiratory system or cardiovascular system or our mind, which controls all the commands to operate this amazing bod that God designed and created!

King David must have realized this when he wrote the passage, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalms 130:14). King David also wrote: “He who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He who formed the eye, shall He not see?” (Psalms 94:9).

Do a study on the anatomy so you can understand more deeply what a wonderful creation we are. The God who created our amazing bodies surely is an amazing, caring, intelligent being.

Reflecting on our created body made me realize even more of how great, thoughtful, and caring our God is! He thought of everything to make our bodies work for us. Thank God every day for your amazing, fearfully, and wonderfully created body.

Janet, this is probably my favorite subject--God's creation, and especially His creation of our bodies and minds! Your article is wonderful--you related a lot of important facts in an inspiring way in a short space. One could write a billion words and still not thoroughly cover all that is amazing about our human anatomy and physiology.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It is so amazing how God thought of everything when He created us. It just shows how loving He is when He thought of everything in our bodies that would make our life easier. How great God is!

Thank you so much for your comment. I just wanted to focus oh God's perfect creations before mankind messed it up. So sorry about your glaucoma. I am sure that is not easy. Thank you so much for your comments. One day you will have perfect vision.

    Janet,
Speaking of eyes: "A blind man is sitting on a park bench. A Rabbi sits down next to him. The Rabbi is chomping on a piece of matzoh. Taking pity on the blind man, he breaks off a piece and gives it to the blind man. Several minutes later, the blind man turns, taps the Rabbi on the shoulder and asks, 'Who wrote this?!!'"
I mentioned that story to a blind member of God's Church and it makes him laugh.
I have healthy eyes; however, high eye fluid pressure results in glaucoma.
God made everything in the creation perfect; but also MADE it SUBJECT to vanity (Rom 8:20). Vanity has many definitions: frailty, perverseness, depravity, etc.
So, all of my rods and cones function perfectly. All of the signals make it to the optic nerve; however, in my case, due to the glaucoma situation a portion of the optic nerve was destroyed and acts like a dead end street not allowing some of those signals to make it to the brain. It is very much like a blind spot/area that I can't see through.
Anyway, I do want to emphasize that God is perfect, all of His creation is perfect; however, vanity is also part of our lives!
"...verily every man at his BEST STATE is altogether VANITY..." Ps39:5
