Jesus taught His disciples through several parables, but one of them ended with the question, “Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” (Luke 18:7).

Some have mistakenly thought this parable teaches that we should beg and plead for God to intervene for us, and maybe if we plead long enough, He might give us the answer we seek. But this is not what the parable means at all.

Two lessons

There are two main points we should glean from the parable. First, Jesus wanted us to learn we should be consistent in our prayer life. This is clearly brought out in verse 1, “Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1).

The other point Jesus wanted them to understand is that ultimate justice for Christians would not come about until His second coming. In Luke 18:6-7 we read, “Then the Lord said, ‘Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them?” The Phillips Translation reads, “Notice how this dishonest magistrate behaved. Do you suppose God, patient as he is, will not see justice done for his chosen, who appeal to him day and night?”

Christians must never give up praying for the Kingdom of God to be established on the earth. That is when God will bring justice and peace to the earth. We should continue to pray, even if the answer we seek is long in coming. Jesus concluded His parable by asking if He would find people of enduring faith when He returns. The point of the parable was to remind Christians that we must not lose heart (faith) no matter the circumstances and that we should continuously pray for the day Jesus Christ will return and restore God’s government on the earth.

Necessity of faith

In this month’s issue of Virtual Christian Magazine, you will see several ways faith can be expressed. Each article illustrates faith in action, but under different circumstances. Growing in faith is an expensive endeavor. By that, I mean we must be willing to take the time and effort necessary to learn what God says to us, and then apply His Word in our daily lives. Jesus Himself said, “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27). We must be willing to obey Him no matter the cost to us.

It is our hope that as you read, “the eyes of your understanding” (Ephesians 1:18) will be opened so that your walk of faith will continue to mature as you learn more about the truth of God and how it applies in your life.

Dear Tinabop, My heart also goes out to you. I look after people with MS and my sister's partner of 20 years died last year at 46 years of cancer but also had MS. He suffered greatly; it was too much for him. He gave up mentally. He would ask me for reading materials on God's coming Kingdom and would read everything. He asked many questions but could not quite come to accept the truth. My mother died at 36 years from cancer....she suffered from the effects of Nazi Germany as a child as did all of her brothers. The point is there is a point to suffering. I urge you to read UCG's booklet on "Why does God allow suffering?" I am sorry your life is totally affected by suffering. Physically you are compromised. However you have the opportunity to be strong and powerful spiritually. I hope you take the opportunity to be strong. Get close to God and just watch what He will do for you. Last year one of my children was taken from me. Initially I was horrified and paralysed but my faith cannot be stronger. I don't need to see God with my eyes but it is as if I have already seen him anyway. You can spread Gods word by your example. I would like to pray for you too.

Hi Tinabop, My heart goes out to you because I‘m about your age, and can only imagine what you’re enduring. I’m not going to just tell you to have faith. Yes, we all need that, especially when undergoing severe and long term trials. But what is faith? It’s the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen (Heb 11:1). It’s believing God will keep His promises (Heb 11:6), one of which is, He will never leave you nor forsake you (Heb 13:8) - that is, if you don’t leave Him. He also promises to heal His people (Ps 103:3), although He doesn’t say exactly when. Please don’t give up on Him, or on yourself. You may feel you can do little for others, but an example of patient suffering can speak volumes, and you have already done something for me. You have made me realize that, despite many trials as a child, I have so much to be thankful for. You’ve also made me want to pray for you, and for others who are suffering as you are. I have to remind myself, to whom much is given, much is required (Lk 12:48). You may not be able to use many of your faculties as you used to, but try to use those you still have. And know that I am praying for you.

I am having a real hard time with faith. I hear people who have never had to live through terrible things say you just gotta have faith. I am to the point I would like to punch them. I am about to turn 50 and I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 30. For 20 years I have been torchured by this disease. It took my career, my ability to play with my Grandchildren, my ability to take a shower, to use the bathroom, to turn over in bed, to walk. To drive, to fix my hair, to dress, to cook, to do laundry, to go to the mall, to hold hands and walk with my husband, to plant flowers, to go to the beach, to pick up my Grandkids, to put on my shoes, to exercise, to clean my house and the list goes on. These are little things that most people think nothing about. This is not like cancer where you live or die. This is a slow death that eats you up mentally as well as physically. I have never been a bad person. Always the first to help people. Now I have 2 aged parents with no one to help them. I feel like I have let everyone down. What good could you see come from this. I can't spread Gods word. I can't do anything for him. So tell me how can I have faith faced with this everyday.
