It seems that mankind has always served those in authority, and it is high time that those in authority begin to serve mankind. We say democracy is government by the people and for the people. This is a hope we express, but experience has taught us that the authority we create in a democracy easily disregards the will of the people.

On the other hand, Jesus was the Lord and Master, but He served the people. One example is found in John 13:14 when He washed the feet of His disciples. Jesus also said, "He who is greatest among you shall be your servant" (Matthew 23:11).

It is not easy for humans in authority to wrap their minds around the truth of Jesus' teaching and example, but there are humble and serving leaders in history who many people recognize as great. One man who seemed to hold authority that was used in the service of his fellow man was Abraham Lincoln.
