In the past, in many places even strangers on the street would be greeted with a “good morning” or “hello.” Recognizing the existence of others is a two-way street. We benefit and they benefit. There may be times when someone will not respond, but that is his or her problem. Most people respond very positively when they are addressed or greeted.

There is something haughty and self-serving within a person who is indifferent to the existence of others. Paul states that we ought to work so we can give to those in need and that we add grace to those about us with good words (Ephesians 4:28-29). We live in an age when in some cases it is dangerous to greet people, and that is a sad commentary on society. But indifference is not caring at all. Into that ditch we need not wander.
