Blair Says Farewell
America and Great Britian have long held a special relationship despite the violent separation of the two in the aftermath of 1776. We have even forgiven the British for burning the White House in the War of 1812. Tony Blair has visited the White House probably more than any previous Prime Minister.
While saying goodbye this week to his Labour Party Blair mentioned the need to stay close to America in the ongoing war on terror...
Mr. Blair said fighting terrorism would remain a tough challenge for Britain in the years after he leaves office, but that it was crucial to stay close to the United States -- despite the severe political damage he suffered for his tight relationship with President Bush and his support for the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
"Yes, it's hard sometimes to be America's strongest ally," he said, adding that close involvement in the European Union could also be difficult. "At the moment, I know people only see the price of these alliances. Give them up and the cost in terms of power, weight and influence for Britain would be infinitely greater. "Distance this country and you may find it's a long way back," he said.
Historian Paul Johnson recently wrote of the relationship forged between Prime Minister Blair and President George Bush as being the equal of two former relationships...
Amid all the horrors and fears of this terrible time the one comforting certainty is the political friendship of President George Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair. It is the axis on which the security of the West and ultimately the peace of the world turns. It's comparable to the links between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill or Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.
The politics of both men aside, it is important to understand the historical and Biblical connection between the two nations, often personified by its leaders. Great Britian and America have played key prophetic roles in the past 250 years. Our booklet, The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy tells the details of the story.
In addition this fine article written by Melvin Rhodes in WNP also details the "special relationship."
