The Greatest Threat to National Security
Can you name the biggest threat to America's national security?
In the last presidential debate of this year's election neither candidate could articulate the definitive answer to the question. Both referred to to the threat of Iran's nuclear weapon development. Both mentioned the continued rise of Islamic terrorism. Al-queda is not on the run despite the death of Osama Bin Laden. The rise of China and its influence in Asia was also mentioned although in the same breath it was said that China is a potential long term partner. Lastly, it was mentioned that America's economic crisis threatens both its role and security among the nations.
All of this is true but there is a larger threat that neither candidate mentioned.
The biggest threat to America's national security is the decline of morals and ethical standards. Were these to be addressed the other threats would disappear. But no one on today's national or international stage comes close to identifying the real threat to America's future.
America is in the midst of a massive moral decline. Like a cancer silently eating away vital inner organs the nation's stand on issues impacting the sanctity of life and the Biblically defined role of marriage has eroded the moral character for more than a generation. That neither candidate can see this shows how clouded the political and social discussion has become.
Governor Romney has stated he is opposed to abortion in most cases while President Obama has clearly supported abortion rights for many years. Romney's Mormon beliefs define his view on traditional marriages while Obama recently stated he supports the gay agenda on marriage. Even if Romney is elected I do not think he would be able to turn back the legislation or public attitude toward either of these evils. Society has turned the corner in its tolerance of both abortion and gay rights and I do not see people changing. We have likely gone beyond the tipping point in acceptance of these conditions.
America has crossed the threshold of moral sin. The military, terror and economic threats on the horizon will overcome her if there is no national repentance and return to God and His standard of morality defined in the Ten Commandments. Deuteronomy 28 defines the basis for national security for any nation that claims the name of the God of Abraham.
"Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth." (Verse 1) Among the blessings is national security. Notice verse 7. "The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways." (Dueteronomy 28:1 and Dueteronomy 28:7).
America's ultimate national security rests in obedience to God's law. Neither of the presidential candidates can identify the problem. And tragically neither can most Americans.
I hate to use what may seem like a trite phrase but I can't escape the feeling the election in two weeks is an election of destiny. Unless the next US president can call the nation to a true godly repentance we will be overrun by the curses created by our wrong choices.
The message God delivers in Deuteronomy has never been more relevant to America's national security.
