We hear a lot about Will and Kate these days—everything from the Duchess of Cambridge’s latest dress styles to Prince William’s search and rescue pilot missions. Royalty has been a topic of conversation and point of fascination for thousands of years.

But what does that have to do with you and your everyday life as an average person?

After all, you’re not being followed around by paparazzi and the press is not scrutinizing your every move.

Well, amazingly enough, God wants each of us to become royalty! Check out the book of Revelation for what roles God wants us to play when we submit to His authority and plan (Revelation 5:10, Revelation 20:4-6). It’s pretty awesome to think about!

A royal commandment

If you’re like me, you don’t feel much like royal material right now. After all, don’t kings and queens have to know how to bow to other royalty or what special fork to use when eating fish all the while always maintaining a serene and calm demeanor? I would fail at all those things if put to the test!

God wants His royalty to concentrate on something a little deeper than table manners and appearance. James talked about fulfilling the “royal law.”

Great—but what does that mean? He goes on to say that it, along with loving God, is summed up as “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” (James 2:8). That’s a tough thing to do all the time, but it’s something each of us needs to grow in as we deepen our relationship with God and others.

Homework from the throne room

You’re probably bombarded with school assignments at this point in your life. But how about trying to complete an assignment that is thousands of years old and would help you concentrate on the “royal law?”

Check out the royal writing assignment for the ancient kings of Israel in the book of Deuteronomy.

“Also it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book…And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes, so that his heart may not be lifted above his brethren…” (Deuteronomy 17:18-20).

We can do this today when we write out particular scriptures and laws that we need to apply in our lives. The very act of writing helps us to think about things more deeply and internalize them so that we can put them into practice.

A future reign

So if you’re interested in someday serving others in God’s Kingdom as a king and priest, take on this writing task. Study God’s word more deeply. Write out the scriptures that you need help applying in your life. Pray about them as you do so. If you do these things, you’re on the right track for the future God has designed for each of us.

Someday you will be royalty. The paparazzi may not follow you around right now, but if you grow in God’s way, people will definitely take notice.
