Does God hold a grudge against us when we are truly repentant of our sins?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] I heard a big word the other day – it was “anthropomorphizing”. Some people anthropomorphize God. Now, what in the world does that mean? Well, it means putting human characteristics onto God, things that we can’t do. And one of those characteristics that came to mind is, you know, sometimes we may have a difficulty when someone does something to us and we hold a grudge against them. Too oftentimes people think that maybe God is a little bit like that. Well, does God hold a grudge against us when we sin? Or are we putting human characteristics onto God? Well, we’re falling into a problem if we try to do that, trying to say that somehow God is going to hold a grudge against us when we’re truly repentant.

In Micah chapter 7, it tells us that God doesn’t hold a grudge. In fact, it even starts by posing a question here in verse 18, Micah 7. “Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity?” You know, who is like God? He gets rid of our lawlessness, He pardons it. He says, “God passes over the transgression”. God passes over it. When we change and when we repent, does He hold a grudge? Well, Micah says don’t put that onto God. He doesn’t do that at all. In fact, here’s something that I think we can really take to heart when it comes to our sin. When we repent, we go before God, He forgives us. Verse 19 says – what does He do with that? Is it possible that he holds a grudge? Well, verse 19 says just the opposite. It says, “God will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:18-19).

So not only does He remove them, but how far does He remove them? He gives us an example. It would be like throwing them into the depths of the sea. And probably more than that. You know, God would probably put up one of those little signs that you might see in an old fishing hole that somebody owns privately, and it would say, “No fishing”. Right? Once God removes our sins, He casts them into the depths of the sea, and I can imagine Him putting up a sign that says, “No fishing”. God doesn’t hold a grudge. He doesn’t act that way. So take this to heart – God is not like people are in that way at all. When we repent, we come before Him, He removes that iniquity, He removes our sin, like throwing it in the depths of the sea, and He says, “No fishing here”. So we’ve got to make sure we don’t go fishing there either. So let’s remember this awesome God that we have that just completely and totally forgives us – never would hold a grudge.
