You can change - starting with the way you think.

Transcript

[Steve Myers] What do you think? Well, God has called us to change the way that we think. The psychologists put it like this – they call is “cognitive restructuring”, restructuring the way that we think. And when you consider that, over and over again through the Bible we’re told to do that very thing. They would say we need to dispute irrational thoughts. But see, God tells us we’ve got to dispute sinful thoughts that eventually turn into sinful actions. We have to change that. We’re told that kind of thinking is unacceptable. In fact, the idea behind repentance – if you look up what that word literally means, it means to think again or to rethink – basically, cognitive restructuring. In fact, we’re told that over and over again.

You look in the book of Philippians, we’re told how we’re to restructure our thinking. In Philippians chapter 2, we’re told in verse 5, “Let this mind be in you”. Okay, what kind of mind is supposed to be – what’s my cognitive perception supposed to be? What is it supposed to be like? Well, it tells us here, the mind that we’re to have “was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). That’s the kind of restructuring we need. How much do we think like Christ thought? How much do we have that kind of perception in our brain? Is that what we’re all about? In fact, we’re told even in the proverbs that “As a man thinks, so he is.” That’s in Proverbs 23. Proverbs 23 gets right down to the heart of things – I think it’s in verse 7. Proverbs 23:7 – how do we think?

We’re in this process – God’s called us to this very thing, to be repentant and restructure our thinking. So let’s really concentrate on doing that very thing. Let’s dispute those sinful thoughts, and let’s let the mind of Christ guide us.

That’s BT Daily. We’ll see you next time.
