A discussion came up at our local church potluck on whether it mattered how often you took the symbols of the poured out blood and the broken body of Christ. We once attended a church where it was a weekly ritual.

Paul wrote: "For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes" (1 Corinthians 11:25).

Some think this verse means the more often you take it, the better.

My thought was: How often do you celebrate your wedding anniversary? Would it mean more to you if you made it a weekly occurrence? We should make time for our spouses often, but our anniversary only comes around once a year.

Passover is the anniversary of a major event of far more importance than the day we married. It only comes around once a year, at the same time as the original event. The Israelites were passed over from certain death on this night by blood on their door posts, and now we can all be passed over from the certainty of death caused by sin because of the shed blood of the Lamb of God. He established before His death the new symbols of the Passover that were to replace the old ones celebrated yearly from the past.

Passover comes around once a year—not every week, not every few months, not when we decide it is time. The date was established long before the sacrifice of Christ, and it has always pointed to that sacrifice both before and after that time.

We recently participated in this very solemn and moving ceremony. Realizing it was on the exact anniversary of the day Jesus took it gave it a status that is not there when you take it on other days.

"And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you'" (Luke 22:19).

"But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29).

This day points forward to still another time, when Christ will drink it again with those who are called and faithful and true in the Kingdom of God.

It is my greatest desire to be there when that day comes.
