How Can I Know Christianity Is the One True Religion?

The Bible teaches that repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ is the only path to salvation and eternal life. According to Acts 4:12, salvation can only come through the name of Jesus Christ, and this is strongly established in John 3:36, where Jesus Himself said, "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe in the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him." Therefore, if we believe in the Bible, then we must conclude that there is no other way of salvation than repentance and forgiveness through the blood of Jesus.

What reasons are there, then, to believe that the Bible is the Word of God as it claims to be? Individually, our personal relationship with God as we seek and follow Him can serve as strong subjective evidence. However, there are several areas of objective evidence as well. Among the numerous objective proofs are the fulfillment of Bible prophecy, the scientific accuracy of the Bible and the confirmation of the biblical narrative by archaeology.

One of the most powerful and compelling reasons to believe the Bible is that God has accurately predicted the future throughout history. God Himself offered this as definitive proof of His sovereignty, saying through the prophet Isaiah, "I am God and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done" (Isaiah 46:10).

Among these are the detailed prophecies in the book of Daniel about the rise and fall of world empires, which were fulfilled in amazing detail over a period of several hundred years—you can read about them in The Four Empires of Daniel's Prophecies. Additionally, Jesus fulfilled dozens of highly specific prophecies when He came as the Messiah in the flesh, and these prophecies were written by numerous authors over a period of over a thousand years leading up to His human life! A list of Jesus' prophetic fulfillments can be found in our article Jesus' Amazing Fulfillment of Prophecy. Throughout the history of ancient Israel, God repeatedly predicted their future and brought it to pass, and you can find more information about God's interaction with them in The Rise and Fall of Ancient Israel.

Another reason to trust in the Bible is the startling scientific accuracy of the text in light of science, despite having been written thousands of years before modern discoveries. The article God and Astronomy explains the Bible's consistency with astronomical realities long before they were discovered, including the "Big Bang," the roundness of the earth and the fact that our planet is not held up by anything in space. While other ancient religions included many myths and incorrect statements about the universe, the Bible is strikingly accurate.

It is also important to note that history and archaeology overwhelmingly support the biblical record. The list of people, places, and events of the Bible that have been verified by archaeology in modern times is nothing short of staggering. For reference, see our articles Does Archaeology Confirm the Existence of Specific People Mentioned in the Bible? A Staggering Archaeological Discovery: The Mighty Assyrian Empire Emerges from the Dust, and many others under the Archaeology tag on UCG.org.

No other religious book even comes close to the Bible on its scientific and historical accuracy, or the immense number of fulfilled prophecies it contains. Given the weight of evidence supporting the Bible as the Word of God, we can trust what it says about how to live our lives, how to enter into a relationship with God and how to receive eternal life. The Bible clearly states that repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to receive salvation. And that's how we can know that Christianity is indeed the one true religion.

    Hi David,
I really enjoyed reading your article, but I found one major flaw in your argument: Your sources of God predicting the future are from the Pre-Jesus time periods. The Daniel and Ancient Israel sources of predicting the future are really proofs to Judaism, not Christianity. Wouldn't that imply that really Judaism is the true religion?
I have two questions: 1) If God gave the Bible to millions of Jews at Mt Sinai, why would he, when switching the "true" religion to Christianity only tell one person??? Wouldn't it make sense for God to be consistent and tell everyone again that Christianity is the true religion?
    2) If Christianity is the new Judaism, why are Jews still around after thousands of years, countless persecutions, including the Crusades and Holocaust?
In my humble opinion, I think you neatly pick and choose points to make your argument, but you leave out the most important fact that they all come from Judaism, not Christianity and you are just piggy-backing on the Jewish proofs to make your case.

We use the old testament sources to back up Jesus Christ but without Jesus to fulfill those prophecies, they are useless in proving anything without new testament fulfillment. This is because of the nature of the predictions, in this case pointing to Jesus. To answer your second question the true religion switching from Judaism to Christianity does not invalidate the promises to Abraham. I hope I have explained this well enough for you to understand.

    Hello David,
Once I had the same question.
I had never read the Bible but I began to search with this simple prayer:
"Please God, guide me to Your Truth."
It did not happen overnight but -- over 3 years (and many experiences)
it began to become clear to me that if a Christian religion was going to be true
it had to encompass all of the Bible, old and new testament. (There are parts of God's Word that even Peter said are had to understand, but MANY are easy to "get.")
If you trust God and ask the same question, you will Begin to receive answers.
For example: Which day should we engage in congregational worship?
Ex 20: 8,9,10,11 tell us plainly and clearly. Gen 2: 2 and 3 corroborate that thought.
Jesus Himself kept (and taught) God's Sabbath ( Luke 4: 16 and 31.)
This one, simple example is given to show you how I pursued Truth during those 3 years.
It began to become clear that not all "Christians" actually kept (as best they could) God's Word. The Sabbath (and the Holy Days of Lev 23) became a type of marker. I began to attend with a Church that stated (and then proved to me) they believed and taught all the Bible.
As I grew in grace and knowledge, I thanked God!

How to know Christianity is the one true religion
Does God exist? Yes, read the bible and He will reveal Himself to you
Was Jesus God? Yes, read about Him and see for yourself
Did Jesus resurrect? It's undeniable, along with many other irrefutable proofs
Will I go to heaven? Yes, if you repented, as stated in the undeniable word of God

Hi, David! This is a valid question, and one that the United Church of God has an excellent resource on - please see the link to our free booklet, "The Church Jesus Built,"
    https://www.ucg.org/bible-study-tools/booklets/the-church-jesus-built

One should not be looking to any denomination or sect, but to the way of life outlined in the bible and exemplified by Jesus Christ and the Apostles. The United Church of God strives to uphold the teachings and practices of the entire bible relying on the example of the apostles and the early Christian church. To find out more about who we are, what we teach, and why, see "This is the United Church of God," at the link below:

So I am very confused and would love someone to clear this up for me.
Assuming that this article is correct and Christianity IS the one true religion, the question is this:
There are around 30,000 officially recognized sects/versions of Christianity—which one of those “versions” is the right one!?!

Thanks in advance to whoever can answer this one for me.

Hi David, here's one person's journey. His recommendation: "I have learned that what’s important when God is calling you, is to always look to His word for truth. If someone is teaching what doesn’t conform to that, then it’s time to move on. His or her message should never add or subtract from scripture" (as taught by Christ in Revelation 22:18-19; cf. 2 Timothy 3:16: "All scripture...is profitable for doctrine"): https://www.ucg.org/beyond-today/my-search-for-the-truth
