So many assume Christ was born on Dec. 25. What is the truth?

Transcript

[Steve Myers] Here's something that many people don't realize, that Jesus was not born on December 25th. December 25th was not Christ's birthday.

In fact, I ran across an interesting quote from Pope Benedict. A number of years ago, he said this, "The idea that Christ was born on December 25th also has no basis in historical fact." He went on to say, "We don't even know which season He was born in. The whole idea of celebrating His birth during the darkest part of the year is probably linked to pagan traditions and the winter solstice." That's a pretty shocking statement from the Pope.

So, really when you come down to that, he recognizes this very fact that Christ was not born on Christmas Day. So, then the question is, should we celebrate Christmas? Well, here's a challenge. Look through your Bible, can you find any example of celebrating Jesus' birth? I mean, sure, you can find all kinds of passages that talk about His birth, but where do you find anything there that says we should celebrate it? That's become a big tradition.

Now, the Bible does say a lot about tradition. One of the verses that jump out at me is a verse that's found in Colossians 2:8. Colossians 2:8 it says this, "Beware lest anyone cheat you," going onto it says, "through philosophy, according to the tradition of men." So, we could be cheated. Much like Pope Benedict was talking about, we could be convinced that Christ was born on December 25th and we should observe that and celebrate it. But biblically, we're told, don't celebrate things like this. You can't make this a Christian celebration.

So, here's the challenge. Check it out. Get out your Bible, look at what it really says, and see if you can find any example of where this should be celebrated. In fact, check out what God says we should celebrate.

That's BT Daily. We'll see you next time.

Here is your answer in a nutshell as the old saying goes, after all they practice this during the winter holiday. Isaiah 40:18-20; 44:18-20; Jeremiah 10:1-5.

“In God’s hands, intended evil becomes eventual good”. The celebration of the winter solstice by pagans has been changed into a joyous celebration of the free gift of salvation by the birth of our Lord. Many throughout history have come to a saving knowlage of our Lord through this celebration. Just as there is no Biblical evidence that Christ was born on Dec. 25th, there is none to say that He was not. Many of us do not celebrate our birthdays on our given day, out of convenience. I trust that God is in control. If this was not His will, then it would not be. Blessings to you all Lou Allen.

Hello Louis, there are a lot of assertions in your post so I will address them point-by-point. 1. You claim that the pagan practices have been changed. By whom? Man? In Deuteronomy 12:29-32 God clearly commands, "do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way". Notice God did not say, "you shall not worship pagan gods" but rather, "you shall not worship the LORD your God in that way". God cannot be honored by disobedience. 2. You claim salvation came through Christ's birth - it actually came through His death. 3. You claim Scripture does not refute a december 25th birth of Christ. That is categorically false. Scripture tells us when John the Baptist was conceived. Jesus was conceived six months later. Adding nine months to then gives a late-september to mid-october birth for Jesus. 4. You claim that if christmas celebrations were not His will, then they would not be. Using that logic one must conclude that God desires murder. After all, if it was not His will that humans murder, then it would not be. If you wish to honor Christ, keep the days He commanded.
